**Fabric Used:** A leftover piece of pale blue Oxford shirting and some mustache-print quilting cotton, both sourced from her personal collection. Given that the UK was under lockdown at the time, with fabric shops and many online stores closed, they worked with what they already had on hand.
Rebecca picked up sewing from her own mother at a young age and has since developed a passion for creating her own wardrobe. While she doesn't often sew everyday clothes for her children, she's crafted numerous costumes for school events and comic conventions.
Her older son showed no interest in sewing, but her younger son, Jacob (11), expressed a keen desire to learn. He began by making hand-sewn soft toys, but soon became eager to try out the sewing machine. Rebecca admits she was initially hesitant about letting an excitable young learner near her sewing machine, but luckily, her sister gifted him an old machine she no longer used.
Before long, Jacob was stitching together his own creations from old clothes and fabric scraps. Over time, he developed a strong interest in making his own garments. Rebecca wanted his first experience with sewing clothes to be positive and not overly daunting. They sought a pattern that was quick, easy to follow, and something he'd actually want to wear. The Sunny Day Shorts pattern fit the bill perfectly—Jacob practically lives in shorts during the warmer months!
The initial step involved piecing together the PDF pattern. Jacob found this part far more enjoyable than Rebecca typically does. He quickly grasped how to align and stick the pattern pages together, and since there were only three pieces, they were soon ready to cut out the fabric.
The Sunny Day Shorts pattern is particularly well-suited for beginners of all ages due to its clear instructions and accompanying diagrams. Its loose fit and elasticated waist eliminate the need for complex fitting adjustments. Jacob handled most of the sewing independently, though Rebecca offered assistance with some of the trickier aspects, like attaching the waistband. He added his own creative touch—a mustache-print patch pocket and a tiny mustache tag for the leg openings. The entire project took less than a day to complete.
The Sunny Day Shorts have become a staple in Jacob's wardrobe, and he's proud to tell others that he made them himself. He's now eager to take on more sewing projects, with a basic t-shirt on his list for the future.
