Rebecca Matthews has been nurturing her son's interest in sewing, guiding him from hand-stitching projects to more intricate machine-based ones. When the time came for him to try his hand at creating actual garments, she decided to introduce him to the Sunny Day Shorts pattern. The results were impressive, and we couldn’t help but feel inspired by their journey!

**Project Details**
**Pattern Used:** Sunny Day Shorts
**Fabric Used:** A piece of pale blue Oxford shirting and some mustache-print quilting cotton, both sourced from her personal fabric stash. This project was created during the early stages of lockdown in the UK when many fabric shops were closed, so they worked with what they had available.
Rebecca picked up her sewing skills from her own mother and began learning at a young age. She enjoys crafting her own wardrobe and, while she doesn’t often sew everyday clothes for her children, she’s made numerous costumes for school events and conventions.
Her older son showed no interest in sewing, but her younger son, Jacob (11), was eager to learn. Starting with hand-sewn soft toys, Jacob quickly moved on to wanting to use the sewing machine. Although Rebecca was thrilled that her son was enthusiastic about sewing, she was hesitant to let him use her machine due to its delicate nature. Luckily, her sister gifted him an old machine that he could use freely. Before long, Jacob was stitching his own creations from old fabrics and scraps.
A year later, Jacob was eager to begin making his own clothes. Rebecca wanted to ensure his first garment-making experience was enjoyable yet manageable. They searched for a pattern that was straightforward, quick to finish, and something he’d actually want to wear. The Sunny Day Shorts pattern ticked all those boxes. As Jacob lives in shorts from spring through summer, it was the perfect choice.
The first challenge was putting together the PDF pattern. Jacob found this surprisingly enjoyable compared to the usual frustration adults might feel. He grasped the concept of piecing the pages together quickly, and since the pattern only had three pieces, they were soon ready to cut out the fabric.
The Sunny Day Shorts pattern is ideal for beginners of all ages because of its clear instructions and accompanying diagrams. Its relaxed fit and elastic waist eliminate the complexities of fitting, allowing Jacob to handle most of the sewing independently. Rebecca stepped in for the trickier parts, like attaching the waistband. Jacob added his personal touch with a mustache-print patch pocket and a small mustache tag on the leg opening. The entire project took less than a day to complete.
Now, the Sunny Day Shorts have become a staple in Jacob’s wardrobe, and he takes pride in telling people he made them himself. He’s excited to take on more sewing projects and plans to tackle a basic t-shirt next.
Simple patterns like these are fantastic for young sewists. Once they’ve mastered a few basic techniques, they can create personalized garments that they’ll genuinely enjoy wearing.
