tutorial: how to make a digital inspiration board

Hi, I'm Lyndsey! As summer draws to a close in the Northern Hemisphere, I'm starting to brainstorm my fall sewing projects. I’m a visual person, so I always create mood boards to guide my sewing journey. Today, I’ll show you how to make your own digital mood boards using free online tools. When it comes to planning, I usually kick things off by picking out the patterns I want to work on. Pattern line drawings are super important for this step, and most pattern designers post digital versions of these drawings online. For instance, when I was thinking about making the Chaval Coat, I simply right-clicked the image on the website and saved it to my computer. ![Saving a line drawing image from a website](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/3a5fe62d298ebdb24299e22656c9a358.jpeg) Once I have my patterns sorted, it’s time for the fun part—picking out fabrics and color schemes! For this project, I found three fabric swatch images of coat material online. In the past, I've used photos I took of fabrics I already owned. Alternatively, you can use color blocks in the software we'll talk about later. ![Three coating fabrics: black, houndstooth, and blush](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/6a2fd6901e4b7e6faf7c84cf72d0d754.jpg) To merge the line drawing with the fabric swatches, you’ll need to remove the background from the line drawing and save it as a PNG. For this step, I used a free online image editor called OIE at https://www.online-image-editor.com. Here's how: 1. Go to OIE and upload the line drawing. 2. On the advanced tab, select “Transparency.” 3. Double-click any section inside the line drawing to remove it, leaving a transparent area. 4. Repeat this process for all sections, but don’t touch the outer border. 5. Click “Save,” then “Save Image Local,” and the image will automatically be saved as a PNG. ![Preparing line drawings for the mood board](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/7d8816624a13446447e5289af2d18c1d.jpg) With your line drawing ready, it’s time to build your mood board. There are several programs you can use, like PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides. For this example, I’ll show you how to do it using Canva. Start by clicking “Create a design” and selecting “Presentation.” ![Creating a new design in Canva](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/60ff7bb3d9d8c71dee6e9a86e8267b5b.jpg) Next, go to the “Uploads” section and drag your PNG line drawing and fabric swatch images into the uploads box. ![Uploading files to Canva](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/c366304b47a3d191e41417f4a3f758ab.jpg) After that, click on your PNG line drawing and one of your fabric swatches to add them to your presentation. ![Adding elements to the mood board](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/9d2d1e8b98d6e4b60eb69d0225c0cf05.jpg) Drag the fabric swatch over the line drawing, then right-click it and select “Send Backward.” With the fabric swatch behind the line drawing, you’ll see the fabric image through the transparent areas we created earlier. ![Combining the line drawing and fabric swatch](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/8c1542a02fc3e5ad28e25485172939be.jpg) Finally, crop the fabric swatch so it fits neatly behind the line drawing. Then, duplicate the line drawing and repeat the process with your other fabric swatches! ![Finished mood board](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/5e49aed90289f1d67d88fad3cda88f93.jpg) I think this is a great way to visualize your sewing projects. Keep in mind, the goal isn’t perfection. For example, the houndstooth fabric swatch might not look exactly the same in real life, but it gives you an idea of how the garment will look. ![Final mood board for the Chaval Coat](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/fe2370162a34ff134fe0abf72c9e347f.jpg) When I planned my summer sewing capsule earlier this year, I started with four patterns but had around twenty fabrics in mind. This method allowed me to experiment with different combinations before committing. Now I’m working on my fall sewing plan. I’d love to see what you come up with! Let me know if you give this a try. Sewing is such a personal journey, and I think these mood boards can help make it even more enjoyable. Happy sewing!
