Hello friends!
I’ve been having a blast experimenting with the Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt pattern lately, and I wanted to share some of the ideas I've been trying. Hopefully, this will inspire you to get creative with this classic wardrobe staple. Over the next month, I’ll be back every week to showcase something new.
This is the first of several Classic Shirts I’ve made recently. (Because let’s face it, who doesn’t love sewing for themselves every now and then?) For summer, I decided it was time to recreate a well-worn linen popover shirt that’s seen better days. The original, store-bought version had cut-on sleeves—what used to be called kimono sleeves in fashion lingo, though that term isn’t entirely accurate. However, I’ve noticed that this style doesn’t always flatter fuller-busted women because it creates extra bulk above the bust and in front of the shoulders. So, I thought I’d demonstrate how you can achieve a similar look with a better-fitting set-in sleeve.
For this version, I went with a size 12 instead of my usual size 6 or 8 for a more relaxed fit. I also shortened the hem by 1 ½ inches to give it a cropped look. Since I’m long-waisted, I typically lengthen patterns by an inch when sewing for myself, so you might need to shorten yours by closer to 2 ½ inches.
To add a personal touch, I swapped out the standard button placket for our free popover placket pattern piece and tutorial. It’s such a fun way to customize the Classic Shirt pattern.

The result? A shirt that fits beautifully without overwhelming my frame. The shorter hem keeps everything in proportion, making it just right for summer.
Since Madrid and New York get pretty hot during the summer, I gravitate toward lightweight woven fabrics with plenty of ease. This shirt pairs perfectly with my City Stroll Wrap Skirt on the hottest days, and I can’t wait to wear this one!

If you're interested in recreating this look, you can grab your own copy of the Classic Shirt pattern right here. And if you’re looking for other options, we also offer the men’s All Day Shirt and the Buttoned-Up Button-Down shirt for kids. For a simpler style for children, our Sketchbook Shirt pattern has been a favorite over the years, especially because of its easy-to-sew one-piece collar.
Have fun experimenting and stay cool this summer!
Cheers,
