On the evening of May 31, the 2023 Shengze Silk Tourism and Culture Festival officially kicked off at the Silk Expo Park Cultural Tourism Industrial Park. The event, themed "Weaving Clouds and Embroidered Brocades in Shengze," showcased a series of stunning displays. Among them, the release of the "Wish" flag art by renowned designer Sheng Yarong stood out. His latest collection, blending the essence of craftsmanship and Eastern aesthetics, paid homage to intangible cultural heritage skills while elevating the beauty of high-end women's wear.
Sheng Yarong, recognized as one of China's top ten fashion designers, graduated from Suzhou University in 2003 and has since been captivated by the allure of New Oriental aesthetics. His mission has always been to preserve and promote silk culture. In 2009, alongside his friend Huang Qiuting, he co-founded two silk brands: "Sang Shang" and "Qiyi."
The "Flag Art" brand emphasizes "artisanal exploration," adhering to the principles of Suzhou craftsmanship and classic quality. By weaving in contemporary New Oriental aesthetic elements, the brand aims to harmonize humanity with silk, craftsmanship with artistry, and create an artistic vision rooted in tradition yet fresh and modern. This pursuit embodies their dedication to achieving "ultimate art."
At this season’s showcase, Sheng Yarong drew inspiration from traditional intangible cultural heritage techniques, using vivid colors like orange and innovative silhouette designs. By integrating jacquard fabrics with silk and metallic threads, he crafted garments inspired by the traditional motifs of "ruyi patterns" and "persimmons," symbolizing auspiciousness and prosperity.
After the presentation, Sheng Yarong shared his inspiration: “These past two years have been challenging for everyone. I wanted to channel positivity and optimism through the festive colors and auspicious patterns on our clothing and accessories. I hope to inspire resilience and a hopeful outlook for the future.â€
Huang Qiuting, founder of the Qiyi brand, echoed similar sentiments: “This show took place in the Silk Expo Park Cultural Tourism Industrial Park, a space built on the original Silk Factory grounds. It feels deeply significant for us to return here with the theme ‘As We Wish.’ It marks our journey from humble beginnings to celebrating our heritage.â€
Over the years, Huang and Sheng have collaborated to innovate within the realm of silk-based fashion, ensuring that intangible cultural heritage skills such as embroidery and buckle-making continue to thrive. Their commitment remains steadfast: to keep silk at the heart of their work and to revitalize these traditions, introducing their beauty to a global audience.
Looking ahead, Huang Qiuzhang expressed his resolve: “Silk will always remain central to our creations. We will continue to breathe new life into intangible cultural heritage, making sure the world recognizes that skills like silk weaving, embroidery, and buckle-making originate from China.â€
As for additional trends, here are some seasonal favorites: down jackets paired with shark pants and dad shoes for autumn and winter, elegant combinations of jeans and small leather shoes for fall, and stylish trousers matched with boots for spring.
