On the evening of May 31, the opening ceremony of the 2023 Shengze Silk Tourism and Culture Festival titled "Weaving Clouds and Embroidered Brocades in Shengze" was held at the Silk Expo Park Cultural Tourism Industrial Park. During the event, the "Wish" flag art showcased a new collection of Chinese women's wear by Sheng Yarong. Rooted in the hands of artisans and embracing Oriental aesthetics, this collection honors intangible cultural heritage techniques while creating exquisite high-quality women's clothing.
Sheng Yarong, ranked among China's top ten fashion designers, graduated from Suzhou University in 2003 and fell in love with the essence of New Oriental aesthetics. He made it his mission to preserve and promote silk culture. In 2009, alongside his friend Huang Qiuting, he co-founded two silk brands, "Sang Shang" and "Qiyi."
The "Flag Art" brand emphasizes "craftsmanship exploration," adhering to the design philosophy of Su-style craftsmanship and classic quality. By weaving in popular New Oriental aesthetic elements, it aims to interpret the harmony between humans and silk, craftsmanship and artistry. This results in a new Oriental lifestyle concept that traces its origins and feels refreshingly modern, pursuing the ultimate in artistic expression.
At this season's press conference, Sheng Yarong selected visually striking colors like orange, paired with creative silhouette designs, drawing inspiration from traditional intangible cultural heritage techniques. He continually innovates the application of these techniques in contemporary design, offering vibrant and dynamic clothing styles. Jacquard fabrics interwoven with silk and rayon, along with metallic threads, draw inspiration from traditional motifs such as the "ruyi pattern" and "persimmon," symbolizing auspiciousness and prosperity.
After the presentation, Sheng Yarong shared his theme concept: “Over the last two years, everyone has faced challenges. I wanted to channel positivity, joy, and good fortune through festive colors and auspicious patterns on clothing and accessories, conveying optimism and encouraging perseverance with an energetic spirit.â€
Huang Qiuting, founder of the Qiyi brand, also expressed her sentiments about the outdoor show: “This event takes place in the Silk Expo Park Cultural Tourism Industrial Park, which was once a silk factory. It’s significant for us to return here with the theme ‘As We Wish,’ symbolizing our journey from starting out to coming back home, filled with emotion.â€
Flag Art has always used clothing as a medium to display the allure of silk and narrate the cultural history of Shengze, the silk capital. Over the years, Huang Qiuting and Sheng Yarong have shouldered the responsibility of preserving intangible cultural heritage and national culture. Their designs combine traditional and modern aesthetics, ensuring that silk, buckles, embroidery, and other skills continue to thrive.
Looking ahead, Huang Qiuzhang emphasized their commitment: “We will always center our work around silk and persist in reviving intangible cultural heritage, making more people aware that skills like silk-making, embroidery, and buckles originate from China, and showcasing the beauty of traditional Chinese attire and cultural craftsmanship.â€
