Hello everyone!
Recently, I've been experimenting with the Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt pattern and decided to share some of the variations I’ve tried. My goal is to inspire you to explore your creativity with this timeless wardrobe staple. Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting weekly to showcase different ways you can adapt this pattern.
Let me start by sharing the first of several Classic Shirts I’ve made recently. As much fun as it is to sew for others, it's equally enjoyable to create something for myself every now and then!
For this version, I wanted to recreate a linen popover shirt I’ve worn countless times during the summer. My old shirt has cut-on sleeves—what used to be called "kimono sleeves" in fashion lingo, though that term isn’t entirely accurate. While this style looks great on many people, I’ve noticed it can be less flattering for those with fuller busts, leaving excess fabric above the chest and across the shoulders. To address this, I decided to demonstrate how you can achieve a similar look with a set-in sleeve for a better fit.

As always, I began by sizing up and making some adjustments. Typically, I sew a size 6 or an 8 for a looser fit, but for this shirt, I opted for a size 12. I also shortened the hem by about 1 1/2 inches to give it a cropped vibe. Since I have a longer torso, I usually add 1 inch to patterns when sewing for myself, so feel free to adjust accordingly based on your proportions.
Another change I made was replacing the standard button placket with the free popover placket pattern from Liesl + Co. This simple swap adds a unique twist to the classic design.

The result? A shirt that fits beautifully without being overly loose, and the shorter hem ensures everything looks balanced.
Living in places like Madrid and New York, where summers can be sweltering, I gravitate toward lightweight fabrics with plenty of ease. This particular shirt pairs perfectly with my City Stroll Wrap Skirt on the hottest days, and I can’t wait to rock it this season!

If you're interested in trying out the Classic Shirt pattern for yourself, you can grab your copy right here. And don't forget, Liesl + Co offers other fantastic options like the menswear-inspired All Day Shirt and the Buttoned-Up Button-Down shirt for kids. For a simpler option tailored to younger sewists, their Sketchbook Shirt pattern remains a favorite due to its straightforward construction and one-piece collar.
Have fun sewing—and stay cool!
