As summer approaches, temperatures rise, and consumers are increasingly drawn to products that offer coolness, comfort, and antibacterial benefits. In Fuzhou, reporters have noticed a quiet but growing trend in the market: bamboo fiber products are becoming more common. From cleaning towels and bath mats to socks, undergarments, pajamas, and bedding, traditional textile items now carry the label "bamboo" — but do they live up to the promises?
In one bamboo product store located at Baolong City Square, the reporter observed that while classic bamboo items like mats and charcoal bags remain popular, the most eye-catching products on display are those made from bamboo fiber. When it comes to pricing, some bamboo fiber towels and sanitary products, even when marketed for sports use, can be 20% to 30% more expensive than their cotton counterparts. According to a salesperson, the key difference lies in the antibacterial properties. These towels, they claim, won’t mildew or darken even when left in a damp bathroom for long periods.
The salesperson explained that bamboo naturally contains antibacterial substances, which is why there are few pests in bamboo forests. This leads to the idea that bamboo fiber can "prevent insects and inhibit bacteria" on its own. However, this claim raises questions about how accurate it really is.
In a local supermarket, the reporter found several pairs of men’s socks labeled as “bamboo fiber.†Upon checking the labels, the composition varied between brands — some listed “bamboo fiber,†others “bamboo carbon fiber,†and some “regenerated cellulose fiber.†Product descriptions claimed various benefits, such as “natural and long-lasting bactericidal effects,†“deodorizing properties due to chlorophyll copper sodium,†and “antibacterial, mite-repelling, heat-resistant, and detoxifying characteristics.â€
Online retailers also promote bamboo fiber products aggressively, often emphasizing their “natural†qualities. One seller from Jiangsu proudly stated that their bamboo fiber bath towel is “natural organic†and safe for baby use. Even if it gets wet, he claims, there’s no need to worry about bacterial residue.
On a well-known shopping platform, some reviews even suggest that bamboo fiber fabrics maintain their activity after repeated washing and sun exposure, offering health and beauty benefits for the skin.
However, experts warn that not all bamboo fiber products live up to their marketing. Many consumers believe that bamboo fiber is a natural fiber directly extracted from bamboo, and they’re willing to pay more for what they see as a green, healthy choice.
According to experts from the Provincial Quality Supervision Bureau Fiber Inspection Institute, the term “bamboo fiber†is often misunderstood. It actually refers to three types: bamboo fiber, bamboo pulp fiber, and bamboo charcoal fiber — each with different properties and performance levels. Currently, there is no unified standard for evaluating these products, leading some manufacturers to exaggerate their benefits and mislead consumers.
During testing, a brand of bamboo fiber towel labeled as “50% bamboo fiber, 50% cotton†was found to contain only cotton and polyester, with the rest being “viscose fiber.†Another bed blanket labeled “100% Bamboo Fiber†turned out to be 100% viscose fiber.
Dong Haiyan, a tester, clarified that true bamboo fiber is a natural fiber obtained directly from bamboo, but it's brittle and hard to spin, making it unsuitable for most clothing. It's typically used in non-woven products like masks or eco-bags.
Bamboo charcoal fiber, on the other hand, is created by embedding nano-scale bamboo charcoal particles into viscose or polyester fibers. While this process gives it antibacterial properties, similar results can be achieved through other methods.
Most bamboo fiber textiles on the market today are actually bamboo pulp fiber, which is processed from bamboo pulp and spun into regenerated cellulose fiber. The claim that it retains the “natural properties of bamboo†is misleading.
In short, bamboo fiber is not the same as natural fiber. Bamboo pulp and bamboo charcoal fibers are chemical-based, offering certain advantages in breathability and comfort, but their antibacterial and insect-repellent properties depend on factors like fiber content and finishing processes. Consumers should approach these claims with caution and make informed choices based on real performance rather than marketing hype.
